Memento Mori: lite lunch and artist talk

  • Nicolls Gallery at Second Presbyterian Church 4501 Westminster Place St. Louis, MO, 63108 United States (map)

You are invited to a conversation with photographer Steve Springmeyer, hosted by producer Kendal Ackerman as they explore the ancient Latin phrase and philosophical practice meaning “remember you must die,” designed to provide perspective and inspire living fully rather than inducing fear.

What truth is there to be found in death? How can death put our daily lives, including inevitable ups and downs, into perspective? Can death help us make ordinary moments and relationships feel more vibrant and precious? Can this exercise urge us to pursue what truly matters right now, instead of waiting.

“One of the main objectives of my work is to create connections. Between me and the world around me, between me and the viewer, between the viewer and the work.” There were three curators for this exhibit who recommended images for inclusion as part of Memento Mori; the photographer, Kendal and Lucie, Steve’s wife & partner. “There was consensus on some, but the interesting thing for me was to see suggestions I hadn’t considered. Several of those are included in this exhibit.”
